Custom Pet Feeder Bowl Development

Engineered Stability Solution for Large Breed Dogs (Bull Mastiff)
Introduction
Most pet products in the market are designed for average use cases. But when it comes to large and powerful dog breeds like Bull Mastiffs, standard solutions simply don’t work.
Our client identified this exact gap. While there are plenty of feeder bowls available for regular dogs, there are very limited options specifically designed for large breeds – especially ones that can handle their strength and feeding behavior.
One common issue faced by pet owners was spillage and instability. During feeding, these dogs often push or move the bowl, leading to mess and inconvenience.
The client approached CADLETE Designs with a clear intent – to build a purpose-built feeder bowl that solves this problem at its core.
Objectives
The goal was to design a feeder bowl that is not just bigger, but functionally engineered for large breed dogs.
The key objectives included:
- Create a stable, spill-resistant feeder bowl
- Integrate a dead weight mechanism for added stability
- Add an anti-skid base to prevent movement during feeding
- Ensure durability for heavy and aggressive usage
- Design the product for injection molding and scalability
Key Goals
The broader vision was to create a product that could evolve beyond a single use case.
- Solve a real problem faced by large dog owners
- Deliver a premium and functional product experience
- Build a design that can expand into a full product range
- Ensure manufacturing feasibility from day one
Challenges
This project involved several practical and engineering challenges that required precise execution.
The first major challenge was achieving true stability. Bull Mastiffs are powerful dogs, and a lightweight plastic bowl alone would not be sufficient. The solution required integrating a metal dead weight at the base, which adds mass and prevents tipping.
However, combining metal and plastic into a single product is not straightforward. The metal plate needed to be perfectly integrated into the plastic structure without compromising strength or manufacturability.
This led to the second challenge – designing a reliable overmolding process, where the metal plate is embedded directly within the plastic during molding.
Another challenge was adding an effective anti-skid solution. The base required a rubber layer that ensures the bowl does not slide during feeding. Ensuring strong adhesion and durability of this layer over time was critical.
Additionally, branding posed its own challenge. Since the bowl has a curved surface, traditional printing methods like screen printing or UV printing were not reliable or durable. The logo needed to be clean, long-lasting, and production-friendly.
Our Approach / Solution
We approached this project by combining industrial design thinking with practical mechanical engineering solutions.
The design phase started with multiple concept explorations, focusing on stability, proportion, and usability for large dogs. Once the direction was finalized, we moved into detailed CAD engineering.
To solve the stability issue, we introduced a metal plate at the base of the bowl, which acts as a dead weight. Our engineering team designed the product in such a way that this metal plate could be perfectly overmolded within the plastic structure, ensuring a strong and permanent integration.
For the anti-skid functionality, we developed a custom solution. Instead of generic approaches, we created a dedicated cutting die system to produce perfectly shaped rubber pads. These were manufactured using rubber sheets combined with double-sided adhesive and then precisely cut and applied to the base ensuring consistency and durability.
To address branding challenges, we moved away from conventional methods and implemented pad printing technology, which works effectively on curved surfaces. In fact, we set up in-house pad printing capability specifically to achieve high-quality, durable logo application for this product.
Throughout the process, we also developed functional prototypes, which were tested in real-world conditions. The feedback was extremely positive, validating both the design and engineering decisions.
Based on this success, the client expanded the vision, evolving the single product into a complete feeder bowl range for all dog sizes and cats.
We then prepared the product for injection molding, and successfully developed the first mold with overmolding capability. A small batch production is already underway and on its way to the client.
