From First Concept to Scalable EdTech Product (Lemur 1.0 → Lemur 2.0)

Introduction

Some products are not just designed – they are built, tested, improved, and scaled over time.

The Lemur DIY Hologram STEM Kit is one such journey where CADLETE Designs partnered with a USA-based client to transform an idea into a successful educational product used in schools.

The vision was simple yet powerful – create a DIY STEM kit that allows students to explore and interact with 3D holographic visuals, making learning more engaging, hands-on, and fun.

What started as an idea evolved into two successful product generations, with thousands of kits being used by students across the USA.

Objectives

The project was executed in two major phases – Lemur 1.0 (initial product development) and Lemur 2.0 (product optimization and scaling).

The key objectives included:

  • Develop a DIY STEM learning kit for students
  • Enable interaction with 3D hologram-based educational content
  • Design a product suitable for mass production and global distribution
  • Improve product usability, weight, and aesthetics in the next version
  • Support the client in building a scalable EdTech product business

Key Goals

From both educational and commercial perspectives, the goal was to create a product that delivers real value.

  • Make STEM learning interactive and engaging
  • Enable students to build and learn through DIY kits
  • Ensure the product is durable, portable, and easy to assemble
  • Continuously improve the product based on real-world usage
  • Scale production for international markets (especially USA schools)

Challenges

Developing an educational product like this required balancing learning experience, manufacturability, and cost efficiency.

In the initial phase, the challenge was to design a kit that is simple enough for students to assemble, yet robust enough to deliver a meaningful hologram experience.

Material selection was also critical, as the product needed to be durable while remaining cost-effective for bulk production.

As the product scaled, new challenges emerged. The first version, while functional, had limitations in terms of weight and visual refinement, especially for large-scale distribution and classroom usage.

The second phase introduced the challenge of reducing weight significantly (2.5× lighter) while maintaining structural integrity and compatibility with existing manufacturing processes like laser cutting.

Our Approach / Solution

Lemur 1.0 – From Idea to Market

We began by working closely with the client to transform their idea into a functional DIY STEM kit.

The product was designed using textured MDF materials, optimized for laser cutting and easy assembly. The kit included all necessary components along with packaging, allowing students to build the setup themselves and interact with 3D holographic visuals using optical materials.

Our focus was on creating a product that is:

  • Easy to assemble for students
  • Durable for repeated use
  • Cost-effective for bulk production

We also supported the client with packaging design and production setup, ensuring the product was ready for the market.

This version was successfully launched and adopted, especially in educational environments.

Lemur 2.0 – Product Optimization & Evolution

After the success of the first version and real-world usage in schools, the client returned with a clear goal – improve the product for better scalability and user experience.

We started with material research and optimization, identifying a new material that significantly reduced weight while maintaining strength. This resulted in a product that is 2.5 times lighter, making it easier to handle, transport, and distribute.

At the same time, our industrial design team refined the product’s form, finish, and overall visual appeal, aligning it more closely with modern EdTech branding.

We ensured that all improvements remained compatible with laser cutting and assembly processes, allowing seamless transition into production without increasing complexity.

Through iterative prototyping and validation, we finalized a design that improved both performance and perception.

Outcome

The Lemur STEM Kit evolved from a concept into a scalable, market-proven educational product.

Across both versions, the project successfully delivered:

  • A fully functional DIY hologram STEM learning kit
  • Successful development of two product generations (1.0 & 2.0)
  • Significant improvement with 2.5× weight reduction in Version 2.0
  • Enhanced aesthetics and brand alignment
  • Mass production and delivery of 4,000+ kits to the USA

Today, these kits are actively used in schools across the USA, where students not only use them but also learn by building and experimenting – creating their own hologram experiences.
