Smart Pickleball Scoring System Development

From Market Gap to a Connected, Tournament-Ready Product Ecosystem
Introduction
When a sport starts booming, the gaps around it become opportunities.
Pickleball is currently one of the fastest-growing sports globally, especially in the USA. However, despite its rapid growth, one critical aspect of the game was still underserved – efficient and user-friendly score tracking.
Traditional methods, including manual scoreboards or basic LED displays, were not designed for the unique and slightly complex scoring system of Pickleball. Players often struggled to keep track of scores during gameplay, and tournament organizers faced even bigger challenges in managing multiple matches simultaneously.
Recognizing this gap, our client approached CADLETE Designs with a vision to build a dedicated Pickleball scoring system that simplifies score tracking while enhancing the overall playing experience.
But instead of jumping directly into full-scale development, the goal was to validate the idea first and build it the right way, step by step.
Objectives
The project was structured to evolve from a concept into a scalable product through a phased development approach.
The key objectives included:
- Identify and solve real-world score tracking challenges in Pickleball
- Develop a proof-of-concept (POC) / MVP for market validation
- Design a large, visible scoring unit suitable for indoor and outdoor use
- Build a smart and interactive scoring system
- Create a wireless control mechanism for players and referees
- Prepare the product for mass production and scalability
Key Goals
Beyond solving a problem, the goal was to create a product that could define a new category in sports accessories.
- Replace traditional scoreboards with a smart, dedicated solution
- Improve focus during gameplay by removing manual score tracking
- Enable efficient tournament management across multiple courts
- Deliver a futuristic, sporty, and premium product experience
- Build a system that supports multi-device usage without interference
Challenges
This project involved a unique combination of sports understanding, product design, electronics, and real-world usability challenges.
The first challenge was understanding the complexity of Pickleball scoring, especially in tournaments where multiple matches run simultaneously. Players and referees often lose track of scores, which directly affects gameplay experience.
The second challenge was building a system that works reliably across multiple courts at the same time. If several devices were used in one location, they needed to operate independently without cross-communication or signal interference.
Another major challenge was designing a versatile physical product, one that could be placed on the ground, mounted on a wall, attached to a net, or used with a tripod, all while maintaining stability and visibility.
Additionally, integrating a wireless control system that is easy to use during gameplay without interrupting the flow required careful thinking in both hardware and user experience design.
Our Approach / Solution
We approached this project with a phased product development strategy, ensuring that the idea was validated before scaling into a full product.
The first step was developing a Proof of Concept (POC) that functioned like an MVP. We explored multiple sporty industrial design directions, creating over 15+ design concepts to define the product’s visual identity. At the same time, we designed the core electronics system, including PCB schematics, scoreboard logic, and basic firmware.
A fully functional prototype was then developed using 3D printed enclosures and fabricated PCBs, allowing the client to take the product into the real market and gather feedback from players and tournament organizers.
Based on extensive user feedback, we moved into the next phase – complete product redesign and feature enhancement. The product was reimagined with a more futuristic, sporty look and improved usability.
One of the most impactful additions was the development of a smart wearable control module. Designed as a flexible unit, it can be worn on the wrist, bicep, or waist, or even used by referees during tournaments. With a simple button press, users can update scores wirelessly in real time, eliminating the need to interact directly with the scoreboard.
We also engineered the system to ensure device-level pairing, meaning each wearable connects only to its assigned scoreboard. This eliminated cross-connection issues in multi-court environments, a critical requirement for tournaments.
The scoring unit itself was designed for maximum versatility, allowing it to stand on the ground, hang on a net, mount on a wall, or attach to a tripod – all using a unified structural design.
From an engineering perspective, we delivered a complete solution including:
- Industrial design and product aesthetics
- System architecture and PCB design
- Embedded firmware with scoring logic and device pairing
- Functional prototyping and validation
Finally, the product was optimized for injection molding and scalable manufacturing, ensuring it is ready for mass production.
Outcome
The result is a fully functional, connected Pickleball scoring system designed specifically for modern gameplay and tournament environments.
The product delivers:
- A smart and intuitive score tracking system
- Seamless wireless interaction through wearable modules
- Reliable performance across multiple courts without interference
- A versatile and portable physical design
- A validated MVP ready for mass production scaling
The client has already placed an order for 500+ units, and we are currently preparing for full-scale production, including injection molding and PCB fabrication.
More importantly, this product has the potential to become a standard scoring solution in the growing Pickleball ecosystem.
