When a sport starts booming, the gaps around it become opportunities

Pickleball is currently one of the fastest-growing sports globally, especially in the USA. But despite its rapid growth, one critical part of the game was still underserved: efficient, user-friendly score tracking.

Traditional methods, hand-kept scoreboards or basic LED displays, were never designed for the unique and slightly complex scoring system of Pickleball. Players struggled to keep track mid-rally, and tournament organizers faced an even bigger problem: managing multiple matches running side by side.

Our client came to CADLETE Designs with a vision to build a dedicated Pickleball scoring system that simplifies score tracking while enhancing the overall playing experience. Instead of jumping straight into full-scale development, the plan was to validate the idea first, then build it the right way, one stage at a time.

A problem that lives at the intersection of sport, electronics, and industrial design

This project involved a unique combination of sports understanding, product design, electronics, and real-world usability challenges, not any one of them on its own.

Scoring is more complex than it looks

Pickleball scoring trips up players and referees constantly, especially mid-tournament, where a missed point directly affects the match.

One device, many courts, zero cross-talk

Several units had to run side by side at the same venue and operate completely independently, with no signal interference between courts.

A product with no single "correct" mount

The unit needed to sit on the ground, mount to a wall, clip to a net, or stand on a tripod, all while staying stable and visible in daylight.

Wireless control that never breaks the game’s flow

A control mechanism players and referees could use mid-rally, without stopping to fiddle with hardware or interrupt the game.

From sketch to a device that ships: a phased build, not a single leap

We validated the idea before scaling it, then engineered every stage in-house, industrial design through firmware to manufacturing.

Proof of concept: exploring the product before committing to it

We explored more than 15 sporty industrial design directions to define the product’s visual identity, in parallel with the core electronics: PCB schematics, scoreboard logic, and early firmware.

This is the exact 3D CAD and design exploration stage below, real concepts, not renders made after the fact.

A functional prototype, built to meet real players

The concept became a working device: 3D printed enclosures paired with fabricated PCBs, so the client could put it in front of real players and tournament organizers and gather honest feedback before committing to tooling.

Every board seen here was bench-tested before it ever touched an enclosure, scoring logic, wireless pairing, and display driving, all proven on the desk first.

The smart wearable controller

The most impactful addition to come out of user feedback: a flexible wearable control module, worn on the wrist, bicep, or waist, or used directly by referees during a tournament.

One button press updates the score wirelessly in real time, so nobody ever has to walk over and touch the scoreboard mid-game.

Engineering for multi-court reliability

Each wearable is paired at the device level to its own scoreboard, so it connects to exactly one unit. That single design decision eliminated cross-connection issues in multi-court tournament environments, a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have.

This is the wristband’s own control board: compact, low-power, and built for the pairing logic that makes multi-court use possible.

A structural redesign, tested where the product actually lives

Following extensive feedback, the product was reimagined with a more futuristic, sporty look and a single unified structure that can stand on the ground, hang on a net, mount on a wall, or attach to a tripod.

The unit below ran multi-week validation on an actual court, fit, mounting, wireless range, and battery life were all checked against the original brief before the design was frozen.
