Cane Bolt & Chain Latch: Product Design for a USA Hardware Brand

Barn door hardware that had to look old and work new
Our client makes premium hardware for horse barns: cane bolts and chain latches sold to a market that values a hand-forged look but expects modern manufacturing tolerances and consistent quality across every unit.
The brief called for two products that read as vintage ironwork on the shelf but are designed, tooled, and QC-checked like modern hardware, with a finish that survives years outdoors on a working barn.

Concept direction rooted in real hardware
We studied original hand-forged barn hardware for proportion and surface language, then translated that into a design that could be cast and finished at volume.
Both products shared the same design vocabulary from the first sketch, so they would sit together convincingly on a shelf.


Product design for consistent manufacture
Every surface that reads as "hand-forged" is actually a controlled, repeatable feature in the CAD model, so the look holds up across a full production run, not just the first sample.
Mating tolerances between the bolt, catch, and mounting hardware were engineered for a reliable fit on real barn doors, which are rarely perfectly square.
Functional prototyping on real doors
Prototypes were mounted and operated on actual barn doors, not just tested on the bench, to catch fit and operation issues a lab test would miss.
Coating and finish samples were weathered to check how the look would hold up outdoors over time.


Handoff to production
Manufacture-ready files, finish specifications, and a QC checklist were delivered so production quality matched the approved prototype, unit after unit.
