Vase Burner: A Decorative Sleeve for a Bukhoor Incense Stand

Turning a functional stand into a home accent piece

The brief was a decorative outer sleeve for an aluminum Bukhoor stand, transforming a purely functional incense burner into an aesthetic piece that could sit on display in a home.

The design needed to merge functional form with artistic expression, drawing on the ritual the object is used for rather than treating it as a plain enclosure.

What made this project hard

Decorative, not decorative-only

A sleeve that reads as sculpture while still working around a functional aluminum burner.

A form language rooted in the ritual

Translating smoke, wax, and desert imagery into a physical shape.

Finish quality on curves

A smooth, glossy result across organic curved surfaces.

From concept sketches to a finished sleeve

Multiple directions explored before committing to a final form.

01

Concept Exploration

Partial sleeve and full-body enclosure directions both explored.

02

Form Language

Desert waves, flowing water, and melted wax used as reference points.

03

3D Printed Prototyping

Multicolor and silk filament prints built to test form and finish.

04

Finishing

Surface treated for a smooth, glossy result.

Exploring partial and full-body enclosures

Multiple design concepts were developed, ranging from partial sleeves to full-body enclosures, to find the balance between decoration and function.

Vase Burner organic curve form study

A form language drawn from the ritual itself

The design drew inspiration from desert waves, flowing water, and melted wax, symbolizing calmness and fluid motion, expressed through organic curves and natural transitions that echo how smoke moves.

3D printed prototypes in multicolor and silk filament

Prototypes were 3D printed using multicolor and silk filaments to evaluate how the organic surfaces would read once finished, before committing to a final material approach.
