Bird Feeder: Stainless Steel Product Design

A wood feeder that could not survive the weather
Traditional wooden bird feeders warp, rot, and need replacing every season. Our client wanted a feeder that could withstand outdoor conditions while keeping the aesthetic appeal and ease of use buyers expect.
The brief meant rethinking the material, not just the shape. Food grade stainless steel replaces wood entirely, engineered for rust free performance, easy cleaning, and a form that stays visually simple.
What made this project hard
Material switch from wood to metal
Moving from a familiar wood build to stainless steel without losing the feeder’s simple, approachable look.
Weather resistance
A structure that stays rust free and structurally sound through repeated outdoor exposure.
Ease of refill and cleaning
A form that stayed easy to open, refill, and wipe down despite the switch to sheet metal.
From wood to a feeder built to last
Four stages, one team, no handoffs between them.
Material Selection
Food grade stainless steel chosen for rust free, easy clean construction.
Design & Fabrication
Sheet metal fabrication techniques applied for strength and visual simplicity.
Prototyping
Functional prototypes built to validate structure and ergonomics.
Testing & Handoff
Refill ease and structural integrity checked before sign off.
Choosing a material that could survive outdoors
Food grade stainless steel was selected specifically to eliminate the rust and rot that shorten the life of wooden feeders.
The material also simplified cleaning, a detail that matters for a product that holds food outdoors.

Sheet metal fabrication for strength and simplicity
Fabrication techniques were chosen to optimize strength, assembly, and a visually simple silhouette, avoiding the bulk that can come with metal builds.
Prototyping and validation
Functional prototypes were fabricated to validate structural integrity, ergonomics, and how easily the feeder could be refilled in real use.

From prototype to a guaranteed product
Following successful testing, the client began offering the feeder with a lifetime guarantee, a claim made possible by the switch to stainless steel.
What shipped
"Following successful testing, the client began offering the bird feeder with a lifetime guarantee, highlighting its durability and superior design."
